QueenDom - A Play

Queendom is an interactive outdoor performative experience that explores the dream and possibility of reparations. Queendom conceptualizes how the promise of “40 acres and a mule” was thought about and discussed in the African American community during Reconstruction. Forty acres of land and a mule were to be bestowed upon enslaved peoples who were freed in America in the reparations package approved by President Lincoln’s administration; it was a promise later retracted after Lincoln’s assassination. In Queendom, I will imagine a world where enslaved people take hold of the minimal resources afforded to them in the fictional town of Queendom. Queendom is situated historically in the American South during Reconstruction circa 1883. The play focuses on how a team of women work together to create their lives while preparing for the annual harvest festival, known as the Kuumba Festival. On the eve of Kuumba, the women of Queendom discuss traditions, the trauma associated with being Black in America, their dreams, and what still haunts them. This fictional town will be physically manifested in the landscape of Stone Quarry Art Park, an outdoor art space in Cazenovia, Madison County, New York.

Shattering

Shattering” is a solo poetic performance piece that reflects on the journey of a young girl, known affectionately as Nicole, as she grows up to be Juhanna. Young Nicole struggles with blazing her own trail and meeting everyone’s approval of who they believe she should be. Juhanna feels the weight of becoming her own woman and transitioning into the successful Dr. Juhanna Rogers. Despite her self-discovery, this dynamic business leader and one-woman powerhouse finds herself, once again, seeking approval. As she longs to love, celebrate, and recognize Dr. Juhanna Rogers her world begins to shatter, reflecting the intricacies of becoming her true self. “This play is about facing my story and being courageous and sharing it to hopefully comfort and inspire others to do the same. There is something magical and heavy about being a Black woman in the world. Shattering explores it all. I am most vulnerable in this work, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

Behind the Woman

“Behind the Woman” shares personal stories from diverse women leaders, to empower other women to pursue their goals and dreams. For the fourth season of “Behind the Woman,” we have searched across Central New York to find twenty diverse women who are improving their communities through their inspiring work. Host and show creator Dr. Juhanna Rogers sits down with each guest to learn more about the woman behind the work.

A Gathering Place - A Play

The play takes place in a quaint neighborhood in New York City, Jersey City, or Newark, NJ. The gentrification of the city is leading to the redevelopment of properties along the downtown area. The neighborhood is filled with working and middle-class individuals. There are buses, Ubers, and local motorists running by frequently. The train stop to the City isn’t far from the restored historical building and several different locations around the building are redeveloped and frequented by college students and corporate employees.
